Each work is unique 1/1, chosen by the artist from hundreds of iterations using Python code and plotted with a mixture of vintage pen plotters and Bantam Tools ArtFrame plotters using pigmented acrylic inks on 140lb cold press watercolor paper.
Artist Statement:
Tangled Quads is based on the data structure of quadtrees where each square is given a chance to split into further quads, those squares given a chance to split, and so on resulting in a patchwork scape of nested squares. Each square is then shaded with CMY inks with hatch marks of varying density and rotation angle. The hatch lines sometimes completely fill areas or meander about the grid, partially filling or not filling squares at all. Different sized squares invite the viewer to observe from a distance and slowly get closer as more detail is revealed, zooming into divided areas. The abstract nature of the works resemble aerial maps or quilts.
