Font Maker Privacy Policy

Effective date: October 21, 2026

Font Maker is an app made by OMC2 LLC, doing business as Bantam Tools ("Bantam Tools", "we", "us"). This policy explains what information Font Maker handles, what is sent to us, why, and the choices you have. It covers the Font Maker app only. Our website and store are covered by the Bantam Tools privacy policy.

The short version

  • Your fonts, documents, drawings and photos are stored on your device and, if you use iCloud, in your own private iCloud account. We cannot access them.
  • Font Maker does not ask for your name, email, or any account.
  • Two things are optional, and both are off until you turn them on:
    • Handwriting contribution (16 and older): samples of your handwriting that we use to build and improve handwriting recognition and handwriting-style technology.
    • Usage statistics: rounded counts of which features you use. Never your handwriting or fonts.
  • There is no third-party advertising and no third-party analytics or tracking code, and we do not track you across other companies' apps or websites. The app does show promotions for our own products.
  • We do not sell your information or share your handwriting data with other companies. We may license technology, such as trained models, that was built using contributed handwriting (section 2).
  • You can stop contributing at any time, and you can ask us to delete what you contributed.

1. What stays on your device

Your fonts, glyphs (the individual letters and characters you draw), documents, drawings (including Apple Pencil pressure and tilt), and any photos you take or import are stored on your device. If iCloud is turned on, the app syncs them to your private iCloud database, which Apple operates and which only your Apple account can read. We do not receive any of this unless you turn on handwriting contribution (section 2), and even then we receive only what section 2 describes.

Camera and photos. If you allow it, the app uses the camera to photograph handwriting and reads photos you choose to import, so you can trace or create glyphs from them. Photos are never uploaded to us. If you trace a glyph from a photo and you contribute handwriting, that traced glyph can be contributed like any other glyph.

Exports. When you export or share a font or document, it goes wherever you send it and may include your font's name, the designer name you entered, and drawing details. That is your choice and does not involve us.

2. Handwriting contribution (optional, 16 and older)

Why we collect it. If you opt in, the app sends us samples of your handwriting. We use them to research, build and improve handwriting recognition and handwriting-style generation. That includes training machine-learning models used in Bantam Tools products and services, and models that we may license to other companies. We do not sell or share the handwriting samples themselves; only the resulting technology may be licensed. Our legal basis is your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.

How you opt in. After you have finished a few glyphs, the app asks whether you would like to contribute. You confirm that you are 16 or older; we rely on your answer and do not verify it. We do not store your date of birth. The app keeps only your answer and when you gave it, on your device. If you say you are under 16, contribution stays off for as long as the app's settings remain on that device. You can still use the rest of the app normally.

What is sent. When you contribute, the app sends:

  • The shape of your writing: the path of each stroke, resampled, scaled to a standard size, and with random noise added on your device (see "How it is protected").
  • What it says: the character a glyph represents or, for words, the text you were asked to write. It may also include the app's reading of what you wrote, how confident it was, and where each letter sits within the word.
  • Writing rhythm: for words, the timing between points of each stroke, rounded to 4-millisecond steps.
  • Pencil pressure, only if you turn it on. Pressure is off by default and can be changed at any time in Settings, Privacy & Data.
  • Details about the sample: how long it took, how many edits and review actions you made, whether it is print or cursive, and the app and data-format version.
  • Technical identifiers (see "Identifiers" below), plus the time each upload is sent.

If you already have finished glyphs when you first opt in, the app may also send them, with the same protections, spread over several days. Signature glyphs and imported fonts are not sent.

Words you write are sent only after you finish reviewing them. Tapping "Done Reviewing" approves the whole batch. The characters reserved for your signature are never sent. The app cannot recognize a signature written anywhere else, so do not write your signature in other parts of the app if you are contributing.

What is not sent. Your name, Apple ID, email, contacts, location, photos, font or document names, or document contents. Apple Pencil tilt is not sent. Handwriting uploads do not use cellular data unless you allow it in Privacy & Data.

Identifiers. Your contributions are pseudonymous, not anonymous. That means they are linked to a random identifier rather than to your name, but they are still linked to each other.

  • When you opt in, the app creates a random cryptographic key that stays on your device. It does not sync through iCloud Keychain and cannot be moved to another device.
  • The app uses this key to sign each upload. That proves an upload came from the same device and lets you delete your contributions later.
  • Our server stores an identifier derived from this key with each contribution, and keeps the public part of the key to check that later requests come from the same device. Each upload also carries a new random number that identifies only that upload.
  • The identifier is not connected to your name, Apple ID or any account, and we do not try to work out who you are from it.
  • Handwriting is personal: the shape, rhythm and pressure of writing can be distinctive. For that reason we treat contributed handwriting as sensitive information and use it only for the purposes described here.

How it is protected.

  • On your device:
    • The app adds random noise to the shape of every stroke before sending, using a technique called differential privacy.
    • It limits how much it contributes each day.
    • Timing, pressure and labels do not have noise added. Timing is rounded to 4-millisecond steps and pressure to one of 256 levels.
  • In transit and at rest: data is sent over HTTPS and stored encrypted with Amazon Web Services (AWS) in the United States (Oregon), with public access blocked.
  • Access: limited to Bantam Tools staff working on the program. To train models, we keep working copies on Bantam Tools-controlled computers, which are covered by the same deletion process.

How long we keep it. We keep contributed handwriting until you ask us to delete it, or until we end the program. We review once a year whether we still need it.

Older versions. Versions of Font Maker before 1.2.1 can no longer send contributions. Update the app to keep contributing.

Stopping. Turn contribution off at any time in Settings, Privacy & Data. Nothing more is sent after that, and uploads still waiting on your device are discarded. An upload already in progress when you turn it off may still finish. Turning it off does not delete what you already contributed; see section 5.

3. Writing suggestions

If you have opted in to handwriting contribution, the app may suggest which characters to write next. To do this it asks our server, sending the identifier above, your font's style (print or cursive), and how many suggestions it wants. If you have not opted in, the app does not make this request.

4. Usage statistics (optional)

If you choose "Share" when asked, or turn it on later in Privacy & Data, the app sends us information about how the app is used:

  • which features and modes you use;
  • how long your sessions last;
  • rounded counts of your fonts, glyphs and documents;
  • the app version.

Values are sent as categories or rounded numbers. They never include your handwriting, text, font names or document contents. We use them to understand which features matter and to improve the app. Our legal basis is your consent.

Statistics carry a random install token that is replaced every 28 days and is separate from the handwriting identifier. This reduces how long statistics can be linked together. Turning statistics off stops sending, including anything still waiting to be sent, and erases the token. We keep usage statistics for 24 months.

5. Your choices and rights

Withdraw consent. Turn off handwriting contribution or usage statistics in Settings, Privacy & Data, at any time.

Delete your contributions. Tap "Delete My Contributed Data" in Privacy & Data.

  • We process deletion requests twice a week. Your contributed handwriting, the records linked to your identifier, and our working copies are removed within 30 days.
  • Deletion cannot undo what models have already learned from your handwriting. It also does not reach security and audit logs, which hold your identifier but no handwriting and are kept for up to 3 years.
  • Deletion relies on the key stored on your device, so request it before you delete the app or erase your device. If you no longer have the device, email us and we will help where we can.
  • We keep the public part of your device key after deletion. It contains no handwriting, and we keep it only so that later deletion requests from your device can still be verified.

Get a copy or ask a question. Tap "Request My Data" in Privacy & Data to start an email to privacy@bantamtools.com, or write to us directly. To find your data we may ask you to send a code that the app shows you. We will reply within 30 days. We use your email only to handle your request.

Your rights. Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

  • access your personal information, or get a portable copy of it;
  • correct it or delete it;
  • restrict or object to how we use it;
  • withdraw your consent;
  • complain to your data protection authority.

Email privacy@bantamtools.com to use any of these rights. You may use an authorized agent. We will not treat you differently for exercising your rights.

California residents. In the last 12 months we have collected these categories of information:

  • Identifiers: the random device and install identifiers.
  • Sensitive personal information: handwriting samples. We use this only to provide and improve the program as described here.
  • Internet or other electronic network activity: usage statistics.
  • Inferences: none.

We collected this from you, through the app, for the purposes in sections 2 to 4. We disclose it only to AWS, as our service provider. We do not sell or share personal information as California law defines those terms, and we do not use sensitive personal information to infer characteristics about you.

6. Children

Handwriting contribution is only for people who confirm they are 16 or older. The rest of Font Maker can be used by anyone, and it collects nothing about a child unless usage statistics are turned on. If you believe a child under 16 has contributed handwriting, email us and we will delete it.

7. Where your data is processed

Bantam Tools is based in the United States. Contributed handwriting and usage statistics are processed and stored in the United States by us and by AWS. If you use the app outside the US, your information is transferred to the US. We rely on your consent for this transfer, and on our service provider's standard contractual protections. iCloud data is handled by Apple under Apple's privacy policy.

When the app connects to our servers, the network connection (including your IP address) is handled by AWS. We do not store IP addresses with your contributions or statistics.

8. Changes to this policy

If we change what the app collects or why, we will update this page and change the effective date. For handwriting contribution, the app will ask you to confirm your choice again before collecting anything new or using it for a new purpose.
